Dog Grooming

Grooming your Dog

One of your dogs basic needs is dog grooming and an important part of your dogs welfare and your peace of mind. Your dog needs maintenance just like you and it is recommended that you give your dog regular physical exercise to help them feel their best.

A doggie bath is not needed as regularly as people however it is important that you understand how much grooming your dog actually needs and make sure that their coat is regularly maintained. A dogs grooming needs depend largely on the type of hair, the breed, the time of year and their general condition.

Other important features of the dog include, nails and the hair around their ears. In case you dog develops a nail skin or ear condition please see your prefered veterinarian.

Here are a few basic grooming basics for you to Use.

1. Bathing

Bath time can be fun for some dogs and their owners however many of us have a very different experience that often ends in water all over the house and all over you. Trying to keep them still is often an impossible task and endurance is the only way to deal with the situation. Be rest assured that in most cases dogs do adjust and get more and more used to the idea of having a bath.

Its is recomended that you learn how to wash your dog properly so that the experience is fun and exciting for both the master and the dog. Remember it does get easier.

We recommend that you wash your dog monthly, however there is no reason why you cannot wash your dog once a week. Best to use a shampoo specifically designed for dogs because the soap free properties will help maintain a prime coat. Veterinarians will sometimes reccomend a special shampoo specific for your dogs skin and coast. Best you follow these instuctions to avoid damaging the dogs skin and coat.

2. Hair Brushing

The best part of any grooming process is the brushing. Most dogs love it, an this is a great time to bond and really get to know your pet while maintaining a healthy coat. We recomend that you use the right brush and follow these guidelines.

  • Long-haired dogs develop knots quickly and will normally need a daily brush to prevent matting and tangling of their hair.
  • Medium-haired dogs may not develop knots but are also prone to matting and tangling and should be brushed once a week.
  • Short-haired dogs are more resiliant and can typically go up to a month in-between brushing.

It doesn't matter the type of hair your dogs has you can brush them daily. Dogs love brushing and it is recommended
that during the periods when your dogs sheds it coast that you brush them daily in order to avoid unnecessary build up and excess shedding.

3. Nail Trimming

Nail trims are a regular requirement for dogs however are generally disliked by owners and their dogs. Many dogs dislike having their nails cut due to  the discomfort and pain and as they know what is comming generally dislike having their paws played with. Dogs are smart and will develop a fear of nail cutting if they experience pain during a session. The best way to avoid this is to take your time and learn how to cut nails correctly so as to avoid the unnecessary pain and dicomfort. You should seek advice from a veteranarian or professional groomer before jumping in an causeing too much discomfort for your dog. All to often inexperienced dog owners trim their dogs nails to far up in advertantly cutting the nail bed and causing great discomfort to the dog. One of the easiest ways to avoid this is to buy a rotary tool to file the dogs nails down.

4. Ear Care

Dog ear care

One place you should always maintain clean and free of  moisture is your dogs ear. Ears are a haven for yeast and bacteria if not kept clean. If you have a lucky dog then they will hopefully never experience an ear infection. Monthly cleaning with your regular dog was is recommended. If your pooch is really unlucky then you may have do give him daily washes due to a continuing or constant ear infection.Dogs most susceptible to ear infections can blame their plight on genetics. Dogs with long hair and floppy ears are most susceptible to ear problems and due to the simple fact that their ear canal does not have as much access to fresh and dry air. Many other ear infections are a sign of allergies. If your dog has a foul smell comming from the inside of the ear it is likely that your dog has an infection and needs assistance from you vet. In order to best avoid ear problems we recommend regular cleaning of the ears.

5. Haircuts

Some dogs such as the Poodle and Shih Tzu have long growing hair and require haircuts as often as every 2 – 4 weeks depending on the dog and the breed and the style of cut. Professional groomers offer an easy and efficient solution to pet care however pet owners can learn some helpful hints about doggie care and grooming. We recommend that dog owners undertake a little training before launching into a full grooming session. There are some great tips to be learned about cutting into sensitive areas like the ear and feet that should be carefully considered.
